Then while doing your research you hear of another product that has been on the market for some 25  odd years and you think that surely if it has been around that long,  it has to be good as well.  So in your research, you find that it is quite a bit more expensive than your traditional vinyl – yet you also learn that it will far outlast the vinyl and the maintenance is much less.  Fiber cement siding has a texture simulating wood grain and may be laid horizontally, vertically, or in the form of shingles.

You have heard of Hardie board siding and learned that it is a brand of cement board siding.  Even though it is more expensive than your traditional vinyl siding,  keep in mind that it won’t rot or  crack, it resists damage from rain, hail and other flying debris and is flame resistant.  It also resists mold and mildew.  It also has a limited, transferable warranty for up to 50 years.  You will also find that cement siding comes smooth and plain or if you like the look of a simulated wood grain or even stucco look, that too is available.  It also comes pre-primed and ready to paint or you can find it pre-painted or pre-colored.  When the time comes to clean it, all you need is a power washer to easily get rid of dirt or insect nests and debris.  Painting only needs to be done every 10 to 15 years verses every 2-4 years with your wood and vinyl sidings.

Installation may be a little challenging and may require the help of some one who knows a little bit about it and will probably take longer than your traditional vinyl or wood sidings.  Yet it can be installed with just a cement nail gun and some caulking.  So while cement board siding may be more costly than vinyl or wood siding, remember to keep in mind that it will last much longer, has much less maintenance and is the first thing that people see when they are driving buy yours home and will leave them with a really good first impression of your home.  Cement board siding can also be used in your kitchen and bathrooms for a different and unique look.

According to your budget, why not think about putting up some shelves and hooks and maybe purchasing some plastic containers with lids?  You would be surprised how much you can actually get into one of those storage containers.  According to the professionals it is recommended that you clean out your garage at least once a year by removing everything in.  Once you have everything out in the open it is easier to see just what it is you have accumulated therefore making it easier to go through and see what you really need to keep and what you really don’t need.

For those must keep items that are small enough,  put them in plastic containers and then put labels on the containers.  It is a good idea to make an inventory of everything that you put in your containers.  If they are too large for the containers, this is where your shelving will come in handy.  Be sure and put like items together for example car parts together, home improvement items together, yard maintenance together, etc.  You may want to hang hooks to put your yard tools on such as the rake, hoe, shovel and things like these.  Of course you will want to keep any pesticides, chemicals, cans of paint or anything toxic in a cabinet secured  by a lock for safety purposes.

Also if you have children with bicycles, a good way to store these is to buy the extra large hooks that are made especially for this at your local hardware store and hang the bicycles from the ceiling.  This really saves a lot of room.  Now for all those loose nuts, bolts, screws and nails that are lying around everywhere.   An excellent suggestion is to get a piece of plywood and some glass bottles with the lids.  These can be empty baby food jars or canning  jars or just any jar that has a lid.   Simply nail or screw the lids onto the piece of plywood and screw that piece of plywood to the wall and put everything according to its kind in its own jar and screw it into it’s own lid.  What a difference this makes when looking for a certain screw or even a certain sized nail. You will love it!

So now that you have everything organized in the garage that you really want, why not have a garage sale to help pay for the cost for any shelving or other items that you may have purchased to organize your garage?  And besides, who knows what your neighbors will buy from you?  Whatever doesn’t sell,  I’m sure will fit in your garbage can and can be hauled away.

Chances are you have everything you need already in your home.  so what you need is a large spray bottle approximately 16 ounces, some white vinegar, preferably distilled water as it will cut down on the minerals in the mix and prevent water spots from appearing on your windows later on, and some old newspapers.  All you have to do to make the solution is add about 2 to 3 tablespoons of white vinegar to some very warm water in your spray bottle, and if you don’t like vinegar because of the strong smell you may also use lemon juice or club soda.  Also if you like, it may be a good idea to add a little antibacterial dish soap to your solution.   This will remove any wax build up that may be on your windows from your previous cleaning or from some commercial type cleaners that were used in the past.  So if you have been seeing streaks after cleaning your windows and you just can’t seem to get them clean, that is why, there is a wax buildup!   This is also true of the mirrors in your home. You can use the same solution to clean all the mirrors in your house for a streak free shine.

In fact if you have a lot of windows you may want to make this solution in a bucket rather than a spray bottle.  Just use your own judgment as to how much vinegar you add to your water as well as the antibacterial soap.  Usually about a cup to a gallon of water is good and about 1/4 cup of dish soap.  You may wish to divide the job up into a couple of days by doing the front of the house one day and the back another day.  It’s important to clean windows on a day that’s not too sunny because the sunlight tends to make it more difficult to tell if the windows are clean and also avoiding streaks.

So now that you’re ready to actually start washing those windows,  just wrinkle up the old newspaper and dip it into your solution and wash away.  It’s always a good idea to do the inside of your windows in one direction preferably diagonally and the outside in another direction horizontally.  This helps to see if there is any streaking going on.  Some people don’t like the idea of using newspaper because of the ink coming off,  so you may also use large coffee filters because they are lint free and are relatively cheap.  Now to really show off your clean windows invest in a real blackboard eraser, the kind that’s made with wool and give it a little extra shine and see if the neighbors notice.

The natural and warm look of wood is a pleasing bonus to any room, but especially in the kitchen.  Chefs and home cooks have used butcher block countertops for ages because of their beautiful appearance, durability, and practicality.  Butcher block counter tops may not be as durable as some styles of countertops such as tile, granite and corian but are more durable than formica and laminate countertops. Butcher block countertops are usually made from oak or maple, woods that are known for their solidity, but they can also be purchased in cherry, teak, walnut, and almost any other type of wood.  Even exotic varieties of woods can be ordered to suit the homeowners taste.  On most oak and maple blocks, cooks can cut directly on the countertop without permanently damaging the surface or the knife edge and most knife indentions can be buffed out with light sanding from a sanding block and rubbing in a mineral oil.  The other types of woods are reserved exclusively for an aesthetic appearance and cannot be cut on.

If someone just prefers the look of butcher block countertops, but doesn’t actually plan to use the countertop for cutting they can have the countertop permanently wood sealed.  This way the countertop is easier to clean and maintain.  Sealed butcher block countertops also maintain a consistent color over time and are, by and large, water resistant.  Unsealed countertops or oil-finished countertops are used for cutting and chopping, but since they are unsealed or just oil-finished, they can warp or turn black from excess water.  To minimize this from happening, a person just needs to be diligent about cleaning and keeping the block moderately dry.  Also, it is wise not to install unsealed butcher block countertops near a sink or other water supply.

Even after a person has tried to main the appearance of their butcher block countertop, like with most countertops, everyday wear and tear may mar the appearance.  One of the greatest advantages of butcher block countertops, over other leading countertops, is their ability to be refinished.  Block countertops can be sanded down and refinished, achieving a brand-new appearance at relatively no cost.  When well cared for, butcher block countertops have the capability to last for an indefinite period.

If possible, installing the countertops yourself will save large amounts of money. With a little research and some elbow grease you will be suprised at how well of a job you can do on your own, while saving money at the same time.

Even if you do have to hire a professional for major upgrades, there are ways you can save money by doing things that you normally have to pay for. You can take care of some of the demolition yourself especially in a kitchen remodel as it will save money that you normally would pay the contractor. You also may be able to do some drywall work and also do the painting yourself. You can include your family on some of the work, have a painting party with family and friends. Include some beverages and a hot meal such as pizza and watch the volunteers flock to your house.

Instead of going to the bank and getting a loan for excess work on your home, try rolling up your sleeves and doing as much of the work as you can. There are always ways you can save money around you home. Watching for sales, cutting coupons, recycling, and even referbishing old items. There are certain times of the year when large ticket items go on sale, like before the end of the year. Retail store are trying to reduce their inventory before they have to pay taxes on it, this is a great time as a consumer to take advantage of items that need to be replaced or updated in your home. Most retail stores send out coupons in their mailers or even in your local news paper that you can use in store or even some retail store will take their competitors coupons.

With the world focusing on eco friendly items and recycling more and more people are trying to reduce their carbon foot print by reusing items they have and referbishing them. If you have a vanity in your bathroom that has seen better days, try sanding the wood and repainting it. This will breathe new life into older items and will give your home a new updated look that you are trying to achieve. You may also be able to use every day household items in ways that you may have never thought of before. You can recycle your slightly used shower curtain, from your newly painted bathroom, and use it as your new table cloth. You can create a stylish new dog bed out of old curtains and packing peanuts.

There are so many ways to save money around your house on home improvement projects, no mater how minor the project is. Something as small as replacing the wall plates around your home to something as big as replacing the flooring in your home will make a drastic impact on the look of your home, but doesnt have to make that same impact on your bank account. Doing as much as you can yourself will save you money as well as give you the satisfaction of knowing that all the compliments you will get will be for the work you did.
